MTA Threatens Co-op City Bus Service
Posted: Jun 06, 2019 6:35 PM EDTUpdated: Jun 06, 2019 7:15 PM EDTCO-OP CITY -
Co-op City residents are concerned about the MTA's plan to make major bus route changes in an effort to provide faster, more reliable service.
On Thursday, Councilman Andy King spoke with those who take the bus from the Section 5 community. He says that, with the redesign, five of the six buses that pick up and drop off at the stop will be rerouted. This means that riders will have to take the Co-op City loop, then transfer at other stops, which will cost them time and possibly more money.

2/27/2012: Contract Update’
The MTA has nearly $500 million in a Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) fund, which they could have used to avoid the 2010 service cuts, and could use to give transit workers a modest pay raise. See from the attached info sheet
GASB Fund Backgrounder Final.pdf
Key points
The MTA is sitting on $500 million it can– but won’t– tap, to restore service cuts and settle a contract with TWU Local 100. That’s why we say the MTA Can Pay!
The MTA is demanding that transit workers:
• accept a 3-yr wage freeze
• pay more for medical care
• take unpaid vacation days
The MTA also wants to eliminate full-time jobs – jobs that support our families and communities – and have part-timers move New York.
The MTA is making these demands despite the fact that the money exists to pay its employees a fair raise AND restore cuts made in recent years to subway and bus service:
• The MTA has almost $500 million in a fund it is NOT required to have. Tens of millions are deposited every year – even in 2010, when bus and subway service was cut and almost 1000 transit workers laid off. That money can be used to get the MTA past its short-term financial problems (NYC is doing just that, drawing $1 billion a year from a similar fund).
• The MTA would rather pay $100 million annually in windfall profits to Wall St. banks than insist that the banks renegotiate the “swap” agreements they are profiting from. That money comes directly from NYC’s riders’ wallets and needs to be returned to them.
TWU 100 says –
Use the $500 million in the GASB 45 fund. Renegotiate the “swap” agreements with Wall Street banks. Restore service cuts and negotiate a fair contract for transit workers.
The MTA Can Pay!
We will also have a press conference Wednesday morning at MTA HQ in midtown Manhattan.
